I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. If it looks cheap and feels cheap, then it is most likely not worth your time. I view my adventure gear as small investments into my safety and comfort bank. If I take sub-par gear to the wilderness, I ultimately pay a much higher cost: I am not adequately prepared, and will end up re-purchasing a more solid, reliable piece of equipment. Do yourself a favor, research and invest in solid gear the first go-round.
My second motto is, there is no magic pill. There are no short cuts to take you to the top. Training is essential, and confidence is key! That being said, bring your training, confidence and reliable gear with you on any and all walk-abouts, adventures, and trails. Burly gear is the icing on a moist cake.
